Fifty two (52) years ago, this Zenith "high fidelity" table radio was considered High End owing to the exceptional sound produced for it's listeners. Like you, I never actually knew what "high fidelity" really meant other than it being something desirable. So what does high fidelity mean anyway? Why should I care if this Zenith radio is high fidelity? I'll try to explain high fidelity this way: if you took a 15 foot length of rope and tied one end to a door knob and stood 12 feet away from that door and snapped the other end of the rope up and down, you would be sending a ripple in the form of a wave towards the door knob. If you counted the number of up and down ripples you introduced to the rope you would find you created about 10 complete ripples in the one second it took for you to jerk the rope to make the ripples. (That would be equal to 10 cycles per second). It just so happens that sounds travel through air in waves just like the rope ripples. Humans can hear sounds that travel from 20 cycles per second to 20,000 cycles per second. This Zenith radio was designed to reproduce all the sounds an orchestra or band could make and all the sounds a human could hear.

Therefore, the listening experience is closer to actually being present to hear the music live. By the way, human voices go up to about 3,000 cycles/second.

On the other hand, FM Broadcasting has the capability to transmit the full spectrum of sound (20-20,000 cycles/second), but you need a radio that can reproduce what's being transmitted. That's where a good high fidelity radio comes in. That's why you should consider owning this particular Zenith radio set; it's "high fidelity". In addition, tube radio circuits have a different frequency response than transistorized radio circuits.

That means, certain notes are more pronounced while other notes are less accentuated as compared to live performances. The opposite would be true for transistorized radio equipment. Both are very good, but our perception is that they sound different. Just talk to anyone about tube guitar amplifiers! The Zenith radio set you are viewing has been totally restored to it's original condition and is ready to bring another lifetime's listening pleasure; especially on FM where it plays in "high fidelity".

You will be satisfied with this radio set because no detail inside OR outside has been overlooked in order to deliver "dependable performance" to it's proud new owner. The sturdy wood cabinet has been refinished in traditional manner using linseed oil varnish to bring out the texture of the veneers and to impart a soft shine. The entire radio was dismantled in order to clean out 50 years of grime from chassis, cabinet, and station dial components. Chrome finish accents and knobs are in excellent condition; please see photos.

Cabinet itself measures 15" x 8" x 10high. The electronics inside the chassis are in superb working condition after a thorough overhaul which included replacing the expensive filter capacitor which is the round can you see on top of the chassis. This radio set uses 8 tubes. All eight tubes are "new old stock".

The last photo shows perfectly balanced FM circuits. There is a RCA connector in the rear for attaching an old style phono. Zenith designed this model to utilize an internal antenna for FM. That means, the FM antenna is linked to the AC power cord wire.

Accordingly, moving the power cord will change the reception on FM. I used an extra long power cord to enhance this feature.

In addition, an external FM antenna may be added by removing the blue wire on F post on the back, and attaching the external antenna to G and F posts. Thoroughly bench tested, this quality Zenith radio set is ready for it's new home. So, if you're seeking both dependability as well as exceptional "high fidelity", you've come to the right place. I will double box so that your new radio arrives undamaged in transit.
