1936 Zenith 5S-29 5S29 Black Dial Tombstone radio. Zenith Black Dial Tombstone Radio. Set plays but needs caps, etc. Introduced in the summer of 1935 , the Zenith 5S29.

This set retains its original wood "Z" knobs and factory installed grille cloth. When powered up, the black dial becomes a rainbow of colors. See picture number six on the right and enlarge it to see how the contrasting colors of black, white, green and red are utilized.

The cabinet was refinished by a previous owner. The original glass tubes and tube shields were replaced with metal tubes. The line cord also appears to have been replaced. There are a few cosmetic blemishes associated with age including a small ding on the raised part of the grille, a couple of light swipes of what appears to be white paint on top of the cabinet and a couple of nicks at the very back on the right side. The set was powered up slowly on a variac for 45 minutes. Dial lamps are good and bright, showing off the very good looking multi-colored dial. The white "Z" lightning bolt dial pointer and the red split second (fine tuning) pointer are in good condition and operate as they should. They dial belt is frayed in some spots and will need to be replaced and the tuning condenser cleaned and lubed.

Short-wave was crystal clear save for an occasional outburst of static/squeal/buzz, etc. As all under chassis components appear to all be original, the chassis should be given the "once over" by a qualified technician to replace out of tolerance capacitors, filters and resistors along with re-stringing the dial belt.

When serviced, you'll find t. He tuning knob directly below the dial offers v.

Ernier or "fine tuning" by pulling the tuning knob towards you. This makes DX'ing on Short Wave very simple and better yet, easy. The three lower control knobs from left to right are: On/Off/Volume. Tone Control, Three Posistion Band Switch. The band switch positions are no longer labeled on the cabinet but reproduction decals are available on the web: The posistions are: A, B & C for.

B-Old Police Band and lower end of the Short Wave band. C-Mid to upper frequency Short Wave.
