Antique ISAMU NOGUCHI, Machine Age Zenith Bakelite Radio Nurse, Baby Monitor.. Called the'Radio Nurse', this is one of the earliest examples of a baby monitor receiver. It was designed by the noted 20.
It was designed and produced the design in 1937 for the Zenith Radio Corporation. It was originally commissioned by the firm's president in order to monitor his daughter on his yacht. It is thought that the kidnapping of the two-year-old son of aviator Charles Lindbergh in 1932 may have influenced his decision to commission the piece. In our photographs you can see that the shape is similar to a traditional Japanese Kendo mask with an American'machine age' design. In 1939 it was displayed at the Whitney Museum of American Art's annual sculpture exhibition, where Time Magazine called it the'most exotic' exhibit in the show.
Measuring 5 ½" by 6 ½" by 8 ½ tall this brown Bakelite case is in perfect original condition. We carefully removed the front exposing the complete four tube radio on the inside. We plugged it in using a vari-ac and although they are dim, both of the original tubes light up.
Everything else inside looks to be in complete original condition. If you search the internet, especially on 1.
