Here we have an exquisite Zenith tombstone radio model 5-S-327 sporting the famous racetrack dial. This fabulous set was made in 1939.
Zenith hit a home run with this cabinet design. Two tone veneers with gold accent stripes in a smaller tombstone make this set highly desirable. The restored electronics play superbly on A. And shortwave with that booming sound and great tone that Zenith radios are known for. The radio has a very clean five tube chassis with a power transformer that receives the A. Broadcast band and short wave.
All electrolytic and paper/wax capacitors have been replaced with modern type capacitors. All tubes have been checked and replaced as needed. Resistors were replaced as needed. All moving parts were lubricated. The chassis has been aligned back to factory specifications. Two new dial lights have been installed and lights up the dial very well. A new power cord has been installed. All controls work as they should. Two new #44 dial lamps were installed. The original six inch speaker sounds terrific. The knob functions from left to right are on/off and volume, tone control, tuning, and band switch. The band switch has three positions, automatic, broadcast, and shortwave. When in automatic the push buttons are activated. For manual tuning the switch must be in broadcast or shortwave. The set plays very well on A.
And shortwave with the long wire antenna that is included. You can receive stations from all over the world. The modern audio jack works very well. It is compatible with I-Pod, MP-3 players and phones. When the audio cord is plugged into the jack of the radio it turns off the radio signal but keeps the audio to the speaker. Plug in your I-Pod to the other end of the audio cord and the radio will play music from your I-Pod or other device. A new audio cord will be included with the radio. The cabinet has been refinished using high quality grain fillers and nitrocellulose toning and clear lacquers. I apply at least 12 coats of lacquer, sanding every other coat for maximum smoothness.
I let the cabinet cure for at least one month and then hand polish to a high gloss. This is a very time consuming process but the results are worth it.
The replacement grill cloth is an appropriate pattern for this model. The set retains its original knobs and push buttons.
The numbers and graphics on the dial are perfect. New felt pads have been installed. A new gasket has been installed around the dial glass. View the 12 photos and decide for yourself if this isn't the best restored Zenith 5-S-327 set that you have ever seen.
