SERVICED ANTIQUE VINTAGE ZENITH 5S127 ART Deco TOMBSTONE WOOD TUBE RADIO WORKS

Tombstone radio powered by 5 tubes, it. This somewhat rare model works Great! Serviced, and has an all Original cabinet! This Zenith was was serviced by a radio technician to get it running safely - but it was purposely kept as original as possible to preserve its original zenith components - rarely found in today collector market.

Usually when these models get serviced, the cabinets are in very rough shape and have restored cabinets - not this one. The original finish looks stunning. Even the grill cloth is original and labels are still securely fastened to the bottom of the radio. Music, news, and sports play wonderfully from it's original 6 inch speaker.

Radio Technical did the following. Tubes checked and were within acceptable working specs. Installed new tuner / drive belt. Cleaned / lubed switches and controls. Replaced line cord and stress relief grommet. Removed and cleaned dial glass (both sides).

Chassis had a light cleaning as well as all vacuum tubes. Replaced missing grid cap on one tube.

Replaced frayed grid cap wire. Replaced 3 missing chassis mounting bolts. Added a new external long wire antenna. Replaced rubber chassis supports and 3 rubber mounting pads.

Cleaned, adjusted, and lubricated tuning gearing. The original cabinet looks very good considering it is 85 years old - this radio was made in the USA (Chicago) during the Roosevelt administration - pretty uncommon to find mostly original. Even has the original grill cloth which is in decent condition.

It sounds excellent and pulls in stations very well both near and far using the newly fabricated attached external line wire antenna. It has SW bands and I was able to. Receive several foreign signals at night and even some in the day. At night it pulled in stations from Europe, and Radio Havana Cuba. This Zenith is stunningly beautiful, stations come in loud and clear! This model is becoming less and less common. However, rarely do you find an original - where just the necessities are taken care of to get it working and such care and attention given to keeping as much as possible original. The 5S127 is highly collectible and sought after for its famous large reflective black dial, for the Lightning Bolt "Z" pointer, the wooden Z etched knobs, the intricate wood latticed grill, and the carved art deco design cues which make this model so collectible. The original Z knobs are all present and in great functional condition.

It even has its original speaker. At 19 inches tall and 14 inches wide - it has quite a presence and will be a statement piece in your home or office for the discerning collector.

There's no doubt this radio broadcast such notable 1937 historical events as the horrific Hindenburg disaster, the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, and the growing winds of war overseas with Japan's attack on China and non aggression pact with the Nazi's! It was certainly the centerpiece and focal point of an American Family's home. The beautiful dial light - lights up highlighting the reflective details of the dial scale and it is breathtaking in a dark room.

Zenith really knew how to make impressive dials back in the 1930's! The dial needle moves in sync with the tuning knob as designed and it is in good condition as is the dial scale. The knobs are on/off, tuning, band selection, and tone. The 5-S-127 was introduced in June of 1936 as part of Zenith's line-up for 1937.
