Vtg Zenith R600 Trans-Oceanic Wave Magnet AM SW Portable Tube Radio 6R40 As Is

A vintage (circa 1955) Zenith "Trans-Oceanic Wave Magnet" portable tube radio! Marked inside the back as being model R600 and chassis model 6R40. It's made to run on either a batter or a power cord, but I don't have a battery for it.

I plugged the radio into a variac, powered it on and only get a sort of loud humming sound. The tuning dial spins but it doesn't move the dial at all. General wear like lifted edges, scuffs, scratches, and discoloration spots scattered throughout. There's writing in the paperwork inside the lid.
