This radio, and the similar looking 7S232 and 9S232, are commonly referred to as the "Walton's" as it was prominently displayed in the living room in the Walton TV series. This specific radio has been fully restored here at Sacramento Radio Expo and would be a nice addition to anyone's collection. This radio plays beautifully as the electronics and the mechanics of the drive mechanism have been refurbished. Stations are loud and clear on the broadcast band and also appear on the shortwave bands.
This is a beautiful restoration just waiting to be used and displayed by someone. The big difference between the 7J232 and the 7S232 versions of the Walton radio is that the 7S232 has 7 tubes which one is the magic eye tube. The 7J232 has an extra amplifier tube in the front end and no magic eye tube. The 7J232 was also used in farmhouses to which a 6 Volt DC to DC converter was incorporated (much like the old vintage car radios).
It can be operated from 115V AC as well as 6V DC from a 6V car battery. In this specific model the battery clamps and cables were disconnected at the request of the previous owner. The vibrator circuits works but the cables to connect to the external battery have been removed. It is set up presently to work on 115V AC. Also, I was asked if the speaker is the original speaker that goes with this model.
The speaker is the right speaker for the 7J232 (it is a 49207, 8 speaker). The item "Zenith 7J232 Tombstone Radio, the Walton's Fully Restored" is in sale since Thursday, September 13, 2018.
