Zenith Trans-Oceanic G500 (1950) serial number 176536, fully restored cosmetically and electronically. Produced in 1950 for one year only as a transition model representing the changes in technology associated with the 40's Locktal tubes and miniature tubes to come. G500 is a classic beauty with its bold and elegant brass on black face. Stunning in appearance, it enjoyed immense and immediate popularity.
Sometimes called the jewel of the ZTO fleet, G500 featured beautiful lines and a distinctive Wavemagnet that incorporated a classy badge proclaiming'The Royalty of Radio' - the only Trans-Oceanic model to employ that well-deserved proclamation. Ever popular with collectors, no serious Trans-Oceanic collection is complete without this important transition model. The cabinet was cleaned and re-dyed for deep, even color and the plastic trim cleaned and polished. Brass fixtures have been polished and clear coated and it has a new clear dial cover. Electronically, the chassis has been completely re-capped and a Filt-R-Pak 56+ installed. The 56+ is a new configuration of the Filt-R-Pak+ which incorporates a line fuse, surge protection and AC by-pass capacitor on board and will soon be offered alongside the other Filt-R-Pak models. This chassis served as the test bed for the new 56+ configuration, and with it the power supply has been completely modernized in a single step. Filt-R-Pak 56+ replaces the rectifier, power resistor, all five filter capacitors, and the AC by-pass capacitor in a single operation while adding a line fuse and surge protection as well as filament voltage regulation. The new 56+ configuration is for all 500 and 600 series radios and offers all the features of the 60+ model except the 50A1 by-pass capability. Dial cords are new and the tubes, including the 1L6 converter were tested and verified strong. All switches and controls, including the tuning tower, have been cleaned and lubricated before the chassis was completely IF/RF aligned to factory specifications to assure peak sensitivity and accurate dial readout. The antenna is straight, extends fully, latches down and pops up as it should.
The red suction cups on the back cover are still soft and pliable. A very nice set, this is a solid performer on all six bands with great sensitivity, beautiful tone, and lots of volume.
